RESEARCH
I am currently researching and writing on the lived experience of being in the decades of life after 50. I call this "Oldering." Unlike the term "aging" which refers to physical phenomena such as the decline in cell rate division and bone growth , oldering includes all of the experiences of becoming and being older. Oldering includes the physical and the metaphysical lived experience of being human and older; it is grounded in the concept that as human mammals we are intimately engaged iwth and embedded in Earth's rhythms and cycles. Building upon the biological truth that all decomposition is simultaneously recomposition, oldering asks us to consider how our insight is growing as our eyesight diminishes. Oldering tracks the transitions and developmental tasks specific to living our later decades. This later stage of being alive as human is as significant a lifestage as is infancy or adolescence but it has its own intent, metaphysics, and biophysical underpinnings. It is a time rich with new understandings of oneself as body and self in the world outside and within.
I invite you to check out my blog at: robinrosesaltonstall.com.
I welcome any stories you want to share about your own oldering experience.
